The Joy of His Gift
Luke 2:8–14 (NKJV)
8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
At Christmas time for young and old, there is excitement at the opening of special gifts wrapped in delight for the joy they will bring. But Christmas would not be a day of joy if not for the special gift from Father God. He took delight in wrapping His gift for us; anticipating the joy which would fill our hearts as we received the Good News that a Savior was born.
A Savior to Joy! Why? He is our Savior from the dread of our mistakes. A Savior from the fear of deserved punishments. A Savior from the unattainable demand of self-righteousness.
Jesus was born our Savior into His righteousness. He is our Savior into Father’s home. A Savior to all who will come freely. A Savior who beckons us to come and enter the Joy of the Lord. A Savior to peace. He is our Savior to Joy! Enter and sing with the angels, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
